Dehydration happens when your body loses more fluid than it takes in, leaving your body unable to function normally. That sounds simple enough. But what makes it tricky is that by the time you actually feel thirsty, you are already dehydrated. Thirst is not always a reliable sign that the body needs water. Many people, especially older adults, do not feel thirsty until dehydration has already set in. Mild dehydration is easy to fix. Severe dehydration, though, can lead to organ failure and death if left untreated.     Why Is Hydration Essential for Good Health?

    Up to 78% of your body is made of water. The brain and heart are 73% water. Bones are 31% water, and the lungs are 83% water.

    Water helps digest food and remove waste, lubricates joints, makes saliva, balances the body's chemicals, delivers oxygen through the body, cushions bones, regulates body temperature, and acts as a shock absorber for the brain and spinal cord.

    When you exercise, your muscles generate heat. Your body gets rid of that heat mainly through sweat. As sweat evaporates, it cools the tissues beneath. Excessive sweating reduces the body's water level, and this loss of fluid affects normal bodily functions.

    So when water runs low, almost every system in the body feels it.

    Causes of Dehydration

    Dehydration can happen because of diarrhea, vomiting, too much sweating, urinating too much due to certain medicines or illnesses, fever, or simply not drinking enough water.

    Diarrhea and vomiting

    Sudden, severe diarrhea causes a large loss of water and electrolytes in a short time. When vomiting accompanies diarrhea, fluid and mineral loss is even greater. Fever raises that risk further, especially when combined with vomiting and diarrhea.

    Heat

    Heat is another common cause. Hot, humid weather increases the amount of sweat and fluid lost. Replacing those fluids during hard activity is necessary to prevent dehydration. 

    Medications. Certain medicines, including diuretics and some blood pressure medicines, cause more frequent urination, which can lead to dehydration. 

    Diabetes

    Uncontrolled diabetes can cause dehydration in a few ways. When blood sugar levels stay high, the kidneys work harder to filter and remove the excess glucose. This process pulls more water out of the body through urine, so a person with uncontrolled diabetes may urinate far more than usual. That frequent urination drains fluids faster than the body can replace them.

    People with diabetes also tend to feel thirsty more often, which is the body's way of signaling fluid loss. But thirst alone does not always keep up with how much is being lost. Over time, this cycle of high blood sugar, increased urination, and fluid loss can lead to significant dehydration, even without any other illness or trigger.

    Risk Factors for Dehydration

    Anyone can become dehydrated, but some groups lose fluids faster or have a harder time recognising and responding to thirst. Age, underlying health conditions, and physical activity all affect how quickly the body loses water and how well it signals that loss. Knowing which groups are at higher risk helps you act earlier, before symptoms take hold. 

    Infancy and childhood. Infants and children are most at risk because they are more likely to have severe diarrhea and vomiting, lose a lot of fluid from high fevers, and cannot say that they are thirsty or get a drink for themselves.

    Older age. Adults aged 65 and older are also at higher risk. They carry less water in their bodies as aging reduces the body’s fluid reserve, and they do not feel thirst as easily. For caregivers, especially those looking after someone with memory problems, offering fluids frequently is important.

    Chronic Illness. People with chronic illnesses like diabetes, cystic fibrosis, or kidney problems that cause them to urinate or sweat more often are also more likely to become dehydrated.

    Symptoms of Dehydration

    Dehydration does not always announce itself clearly. In the early stages, you might just feel a little off, but it can become dangerous very quickly if you don't pay attention to the symptoms. Symptoms also look different depending on age. What shows up in an adult is not the same as what you will see in a young child or infant. 

    In adults:

    • Headache, dizziness
    • Fatigue
    • Dry mouth and dry skin
    • High heart rate
    • Loss of appetite with possible sugar cravings
    • Muscle cramps
    • Low urine output and less sweating
    • Constipation
    • Dark-colored urine

    In infants and young children:

    • Dry mouth, skin, and lips
    • No tears when crying
    • Less than six wet diapers per day in infants and no wet diapers for eight hours in toddlers
    • Eyes that look sunken, and a sunken soft spot on the head
    • Rapid heartbeat
    • Unusual sleepiness or drowsiness
    • Irritability

    One simple check at home: look at the color of urine. If it is clear, pale, or straw-colored, hydration is adequate. If it is darker than that, more fluids are needed.

    Diagnosis and Tests

    A healthcare professional often diagnoses dehydration from symptoms alone. For a child, a change in weight may also be used in the diagnosis.

    To confirm the diagnosis and determine how severe it is, doctors can order blood tests that check electrolyte levels, especially sodium and potassium, as well as kidney function. Urine tests can also be advised to check how much dehydration is present and may also identify bladder infection or a kidney problem.

    Healthcare providers categorize dehydration into three levels:

    Mild dehydration requires oral fluid intake and should improve within five to ten minutes.
    Moderate dehydration needs intravenous fluids at a healthcare facility.
    Severe dehydration requires emergency treatment.

    Treatment of Dehydration

    Treatment for dehydration is pretty much straightforward: replace the fluids and electrolytes that have been lost. The best approach depends on the person's age, how severe the dehydration is, and what caused it.

    For mild to moderate cases, most adults can recover by drinking more water or other liquids. Drinking full-strength fruit juice and soft drinks may make diarrhea worse, so these are best avoided.

    For infants and young children, oral rehydration solutions with electrolytes are recommended. Start with about one teaspoon (5 millilitres) every one to five minutes and increase as the child is able to tolerate it. A syringe works well for very young children. Older children can take diluted sports drinks, mixed at one part sports drink to one part water.

    For active adults in hot conditions, oral rehydration sachets mixed into water can help. Sports drinks replace not only fluid but also electrolytes like sodium and potassium lost through sweat. Beverages with alcohol or caffeine should be avoided as they pull water from the body and make dehydration worse.

    Complications of Untreated Dehydration

    Left untreated, dehydration stops being a mild inconvenience and becomes genuinely dangerous.

    Heat injury is one risk. People who do not drink enough during exercise in the heat can develop anything from mild heat cramps to life-threatening heatstroke.

    Repeated bouts of dehydration can lead to urinary tract infections, kidney stones, and kidney failure. Electrolyte imbalances affect how electrical signals travel between cells, which can cause muscles to tighten or contract uncontrollably and can even lead to seizures.

    One of the most serious complications is hypovolemic shock, where low blood volume causes a sharp drop in blood pressure and reduces the amount of oxygen the body can carry. It can be fatal. 

    When to Seek Emergency Care

    Some symptoms point to severe dehydration and need immediate attention. Do not wait to see if they pass.

    Go to the emergency room or call emergency services right away if you or someone else has a fever of 103 degrees Fahrenheit (39.4 degrees Celsius) or higher, red and dry skin, rapid pulse, seizures, no sweating, confusion or slurred speech, loss of consciousness, or hallucinations. If the diarrhea lasts more than 24 hours or if there is blood or mucus in the stool.

    In infants and young children, get medical help immediately if there is confusion, lethargy, fainting, no urination for 8 hours, rapid heartbeat, rapid breathing, or signs of shock.

    Prevention

    Most cases of dehydration are preventable. Just follow these simple steps and keep dehydration at bay.

    Drink water throughout the day, including at meals. The standard advice is eight glasses of water per day, though individual needs vary based on weight, age, activity level, and climate. Avoid sodas, alcohol, and caffeinated drinks. Carry a water bottle and keep it filled. Add a wedge of lemon or lime if plain water is unappealing. Eat foods with high water content, such as soups, fruits, and vegetables. If drinking large amounts at once feels difficult, spread smaller amounts across the day.

    For exercise and outdoor activity, drink at least 16 to 20 ounces of fluid one to two hours before being outside. Consume 6 to 12 ounces every 10 to 15 minutes during the activity. After finishing, drink at least another 16 to 24 ounces to replace what was lost.

    During illness, older adults in particular should drink extra fluids even for minor conditions like the flu. For children who are vomiting or have diarrhea, start oral rehydration early, at the first signs of illness, rather than waiting for dehydration to develop.

    Can you be dehydrated even if you are drinking water?

    Yes. If you are losing fluids faster than you are replacing them, through heavy sweating, vomiting, diarrhea, or fever, you can become dehydrated even while drinking water. In those cases, plain water may not be enough. An oral rehydration solution or electrolyte drink is more effective.

    How quickly does dehydration resolve?

    Mild to moderate dehydration should go away in less than a day once fluids are replaced and the underlying cause is addressed. With appropriate hospital treatment, severe dehydration should resolve within two to three days. 

    Are sports drinks better than water for dehydration?

    How to Make Oral Rehydration Solution (ORS) at Home

    In 1 liter of safe drinking water, add half a small spoon of salt (about 3.5 g) and four big spoons or eight small spoons of sugar (about 40 g). Stir well until everything dissolves completely.

    Use the homemade ORS within 24 hours, and throw away any leftover solution after that.

    What fruits, vegetables, and foods can I include in my diet to help protect against dehydration?

    To protect yourself from dehydration, include foods with high water content in your daily diet. Good choices include fruits such as watermelon, oranges, peaches, pineapple, strawberries, and muskmelon, as well as vegetables like cucumber, tomatoes, lettuce, zucchini, and celery. Coconut water, soups, curd/yogurt, buttermilk, and watery porridges can also help.
