A dust allergy is an allergic reaction triggered by particles found in household dust. The most common culprit is the dust mite, a tiny creature related to spiders that lives in bedding, mattresses, carpets, and upholstered furniture. Dust mites are too small to see without a microscope. They feed on dead skin cells shed by people and pets.
Other particles in household dust, such as mould spores, cockroach debris, pet dander, and pollen, can also trigger allergic reactions in some people.
Symptoms can appear throughout the year. Because dust mites live mainly in bedding and mattresses, many people notice their symptoms are worse at night or just after waking up.

An allergy blood test, also called an immunoglobulin E (IgE) blood test, checks for specific antibodies that the body produces in response to allergens. This is used when a skin test is not possible, such as when someone has a skin condition or is taking medication that could affect results.
Treatment works on two fronts: cutting down exposure to dust mites and using medication to control symptoms. Removing all dust mites from a home is not possible, but reducing their numbers does reduce how often and how badly reactions occur.
Without proper management, ongoing exposure to dust mite allergens can lead to further health problems. The sinuses can become blocked due to persistent nasal swelling, increasing the risk of sinus infections (sinusitis).
People who have both asthma and a dust allergy tend to have worse asthma control and more frequent attacks needing urgent treatment. Because dust mites are present year-round, the allergy can quietly make asthma harder to manage even when no obvious reaction is happening.
Eczema flare-ups are also linked to dust mite exposure. Some people develop increased sensitivity to other irritants such as cigarette smoke, air pollution, and dry air.
Dust allergy symptoms can look a lot like a common cold. If symptoms last longer than a week, it is likely an allergy rather than an infection.

Reducing dust mite exposure in the home is the most effective way to prevent reactions. The bedroom is the best place to start, since people spend several hours there each night in close contact with bedding and mattresses. Covering mattresses, pillows, and box springs with allergen-proof, tightly woven fabric covers prevents mites from escaping.
Washing all bedding once a week in hot water of at least 54°C (130°F) kills dust mites. Items that cannot be washed in hot water can be placed in the dryer at the same temperature for at least 15 minutes or frozen for 24 hours. Freezing kills the mites but does not remove the allergens, so washing afterward is still needed.
Keeping indoor humidity below 50% is important, as dust mites cannot survive in dry conditions. A dehumidifier or air conditioner can help with this, and a hygrometer can measure humidity levels at home. Hard flooring such as tile, wood, laminate, or vinyl is easier to keep dust-free than carpets. Carpets trap allergens deep inside the fibres, and even regular vacuuming does not remove most dust mites. If carpets must stay, a vacuum with a high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filter is more effective.
Other measures include dusting with a damp cloth rather than a dry one, reducing clutter that gathers dust, keeping pets out of the bedroom, washing stuffed toys in hot water regularly, and installing a furnace or air-conditioning filter with a Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value (MERV) of 11 or 12, changed every three months.
