UAE Approves New Weight Loss Pill, Orforglipron: No Injections, Just One Daily Pill

For years, managing obesity through medication meant one thing: injections. Weekly, sometimes daily, with all the prep and planning that comes with them. A lot of people found that off-putting enough to avoid treatment altogether. That may change.

In early April 2026, the Emirates Drug Establishment (EDE) approved Foundayo, the brand name for orforglipron, a once-daily oral weight loss tablet developed by Eli Lilly. The UAE became the second country in the world to register the drug, just days after the US FDA gave its own green light on April 1st. It is expected to reach eligible individuals in the UAE from May 2026.

Obesity is not a niche problem. More than one billion people worldwide are living with it, and the UAE is no exception. Local health authorities have long flagged it as a serious concern, given how closely it connects to conditions like type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and certain cancers.

What doctors want people to understand is that obesity is not simply a result of bad habits. It is a chronic disease shaped by genetics, biology, and environment. The problem is that most people still do not see it that way. Nearly two-thirds of people with obesity think that diet and exercise alone are sufficient to manage their condition, according to a recent Ipsos global study. That gap between medical understanding and public perception is part of why so many people go without proper treatment for years.

Obesity & Health Risks in the UAE 

Orforglipron is a small-molecule, non-peptide GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1) receptor agonist taken once daily, with no restrictions on food, water, or timing. Most oral medications in this class require them to be taken on an empty stomach and to avoid eating or drinking for a period afterward. Orforglipron skips that entirely. 

It belongs to the same class of medicines as injectable GLP-1 therapies, working by regulating appetite and metabolism, helping people feel fuller for longer, and reducing overall food intake. 
Clinical trials showed promising results. Those taking the highest dose experienced an average weight loss of up to 12.4%, making the oral medication much closer in effectiveness to injectable weight loss treatments. The most common side effects reported were stomach-related. Nausea and vomiting affected around a third of participants on the higher dose, described as mild to moderate in most cases.

What is Orforglipron?

Not everyone qualifies. Doctors have been clear that this pill will only be prescribed after a proper medical evaluation. Adults with obesity, defined as a BMI (Body Mass Index) of 30 or higher, or those who are overweight with a BMI greater than 27 and at least one related health condition, will be eligible for the treatment. According to medical experts, these conditions may include type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, sleep apnea, or joint-related issues. 

The medication may also be considered for those who have not lost enough weight through lifestyle changes, particularly when diet, exercise, and other conventional measures have not delivered the desired results.

Who is Eligible for Orforglipron, the Weight Loss Pill? 

Individuals considering treatment will need a proper medical evaluation before starting the medication, including weight and BMI assessment, blood sugar levels, lipid profile, and liver, kidney, and thyroid function tests, along with a detailed personal and family medical history. Additional tests may be needed depending on individual circumstances.

What Checks Are Needed Before Taking? 

The medication should be avoided by those with a personal or family history of certain thyroid cancers, those with specific endocrine disorders such as MEN-2, and pregnant or breastfeeding women. According to clinicians, people with severe gastrointestinal conditions, kidney issues, or a history of adverse reactions to similar medications may also require careful evaluation before starting treatment.

Who Should Avoid Orforglipron? 

No. The pill is not a replacement for diet and exercise; doctors are firm on this. It is designed to support the changes you make, not do the work for you. Eating well and staying active are still part of the deal. And you should have a <a href="https://firstresponsehealthcare.com/ae/blogs/know-healthy-diet-plan-for-weight-loss">proper diet plan </a>and healthy lifestyle always. 
Stopping the medication without keeping up those habits is also likely to bring the weight back. That is something worth knowing before you start. 
And this is not a short course of treatment. Depending on how well it works for you and how your body tolerates it, weight management with orforglipron could be a long-term commitment.

Can You Skip Lifestyle Changes? 

You will need a specialist, at least to start with. Endocrinologists, obesity specialists, and internal medicine doctors are the right people to go to; they can look at your full medical history, check whether the medication suits you, and keep an eye on how you respond over time.

This matters because weight loss medication is not the same for everyone. Your existing health conditions, other medications you are on, any kidney or digestive issues, and your overall goals all factor into whether orforglipron is appropriate for you and at what dose. A specialist is best placed to make that call and to adjust the treatment as needed.

Who Can Prescribe Orforglipron? 

Orforglipron may open the door for people who have been interested in medical weight loss but felt hesitant about injections. But like any prescription treatment, it is not something to start based on headlines alone.
